In this latest Disinfo art showcase, I’ll be featuring our very own Andrew Hendricks. Though he’s better known around these parts as Number1Framer.

Being a long time Disinfonaut, it’s no surprise that his work reflects the same issues and themes often discussed here.

Hendricks currently has three series with overlapping themes: Ecological Austerity, Stumps, and Dummy.

Ecological Austerity

His Ecological Austerity collection consists of upcycled old furniture. He explains, “Just as nature is used as a disposable resource to create these objects, I further reduce the disposed of objects to reveal a true nature.”

The series is a metaphor for Hendricks’ personal history. “I was raised in a very rural area and had the Ottawa National Forest as a back yard. After school, I moved to the city to do the whole ‘make a living’ thing and found myself feeling like a product of nature forced into the mold of domesticated urban life.”

He further explains that “the tree vs. utility pole imagery acts as a two-fold metaphor. It works in a literal way showing the void left by urban gluttony and also encompasses a psychic sore devoid of any connection with what once was. I see the world as two environments vying for turf against each other. One side is dependent on devouring the other and this is the side humans have chosen to align themselves with. The political elements that creep in fit this dichotomy as well.”

Dummy Series

“The dummies use a surreal, startling contrast between subject matter and media to grab the viewer’s attention. They are installed at eye level so as to be confrontational. I want people to consider the ramifications of total information awareness and the fact that we ARE always being watched. I do this by confronting the viewer face to face with my cameras rather than having them hide in a high corner watching from the background. I want people to feel like they’re being physically challenged by the presence of these devices. They stick out from the wall and shine in gallery lighting. They watch you and there’s no hiding from them or lying to yourself about their purpose or presence.”

The Evil Eye

“‘The Evil Eye’ is a leather wrapped dummy surveillance camera embellished with spikes and chrome hardware. Inside the lens of ’The Evil Eye’ is the great and glorious Eye of Providence. It’s the universal Illuminati symbol back-lit that literally watches you.”
